"Let's create a better internet together" - Safer Internet Day 2014

The 11th Safer Internet Day is celebrated worldwide on Tuesday 11 February 2014. The theme for the day is: "Let's create a better internet together". On his day all stakeholders – children and young people, parents and carers, teachers and educators, industry and politicians – are asked to join Insafe in marking the day and working together to build a better internet for all, but particularly children and young people.

The Secretary General of the Council of Europe, Thorbjørn Jagland has published a statement on the eve of Safer Internet Day (SID)
"Children and young people need to be safe when they use the Internet, safe from abuse, safe from cyberbullying and safe from hate speech. Safer Internet Day offers us an opportunity to understand how hate speech content can affect the safety of young people and children online. On this occasion, the Council of Europe is holding a European Action Day as part of our No Hate Speech Movement, a campaign devised and being run by young people. In February, activists of the movement are compiling reports of hate speech that can endanger young people or children. The No Hate Speech movement involves national campaign committees within the 47 member states of the Council of Europe. 38 member states are already developing national campaigns. This is a good start and I encourage more countries to join us.
The Internet today represents the sum of what users do with it, so let’s create a better Internet together! "

SID is organised by Insafe in February of each year to promote safer and more responsible use of online technology and mobile phones, especially amongst children and young people across the world.
The Safer Internet Day website showcases some of the exciting activities and events that are taking place to celebrate the day. You can find a map on the site to get started, using the zoom control to locate the contacts and events in your country or visit the 'SID Near You' section to explore news from the many countries and institutions which were involved. Visit the 'SID Gallery' to find great resources from across the Insafe network and beyond.
